Ricci has been engaged in sexual freedom activism for several decades.
In 2003, she helped found the Woodhull Freedom Foundation, a nonpartisan, nonprofit human rights organization dedicated to defending the personal autonomy of all individuals.
As the Executive Director, then President and CEO, Ricci has led Woodhull for more than twenty years.
Ricci has traveled nationwide, giving evidence and speaking at conferences. She has frequently presented contentious themes that allow for constructive dialogue, which helps build bridges and foster coalitions.
You can find Ricci at the forefront of the discourse, bringing human rights to the forefront, whether the topic at hand is censorship, the decriminalization of sex work, the shackling of incarcerated women in labor, or the right to family and reproductive justice.
Since its beginning, the Foundation has been a strong supporter of the idea that sexual liberty should be recognized as a fundamental human right, deserving of its position alongside other liberties that have been battled for, such as the right to freedom of expression, the right to family, and the right to privacy.
Working alongside allies who represent specific issues, identities, and communities while simultaneously serving as an umbrella advocate for sexual rights as a whole, Woodhull engages in activities such as having conversations with students about the legitimacy of all consenting families and successfully lobbying Congress to eliminate condoms as evidence of prostitution.
Regarding a wide variety of topics, the Woodhull Freedom Foundation works to change laws, regulations, and practices that all share one thing in common: they either reject or undermine our fundamental human right to sexual freedom. The inclusion of domestic partner benefits as a component of same-sex marriage was a detail that was at danger in the original law. Woodhull played a significant role in ensuring that this inclusion was made.
In addition to testifying and lobbying from a human rights perspective on behalf of efforts to end the practice of shackling incarcerated women in Florida prisons during labor and childbirth, they played a significant role in the termination of Washington, District of Columbia’s “Prostitution Free Zones,” which violated legally defensible rights.
Additionally, Woodhull was successful in lobbying for a modification in the legislation that governs sexting activities between minors.
Additionally, the Woodhull Freedom Foundation is the leading voice emanating from the intersection of sexual rights and human rights. It insists that the United States should protect human rights, including those related to sexual freedom, rather than limit them. It has also been successful in bringing about accountability and progress in legislative, judicial, and corporate settings.
Woodhull was the primary plaintiff in the FOSTA/SESTA case brought against the United States by the Woodhull Freedom Foundation. This was the only federal challenge to this unlawful legislation.
